Jana John

My artwork: Working out of my studio at home in Louisville, Ky., I hand-build pottery, using terra cotta clay. I roll the clay into slabs with a rolling pin and cut out my shapes freehand. I call my pottery operation “Showkitty,” and many of my pieces have a cat motif. I love cats and find they have a lot of personality, which I try to capture in my designs. I enjoy making other animals too. Masks are my specialty. Some are cats, and others are women (including my “Derby Babes”). The latter are an exploration of the many faces and personalities of women.
My whimsical work reveals my quirky sense of humor. I hope it makes you smile.
Background: A native of Oklahoma, I moved to Louisville, Ky., from Jackson, Miss., in January 2000. I worked in the newspaper business for more than 35 years before retiring in 2015. I now work on my clay art full time.
